Related Arts

Art exposes students to various mediums and allows individual expression with hands-on activities which are linked with curriculum requirements in each grade level. Some of the topics and mediums explored are art history, sketching, pastels, clay, watercolors, cartooning, painting, pottery and more.

The MCMS Band offers a variety of options to explore music. Anyone in any grade level can join the MCMS Band!! Band classes include Beginning Brass, Beginning Woodwinds, Percussion Class, Intermediate Band and Advanced Band. The band performs at local and community events like football games, parades, pep rallies, and concerts. Students can find many ways to get involved in enrichment opportunities, such as mid-state auditions and private lessons. 

Choir classes will teach students to read music and how to develop a strong, smooth singing voice. Concert Choir options include 6^th Grade Choir, Men’s Choir, and Advanced Choir. Show Choir options include both non-competing and competing groups. Students have opportunities to attend field trips throughout the school year that enrich their musical learning experience.

Students will develop skills in operating a keyboard by touch with emphasis on entering the alphabet, numbers, and symbols with proper technique. Students will also create projects using various pieces of technology, such as Google Apps for Education.

Students will demonstrate competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. Lifetime Wellness is a holistic approach to health and lifetime physical activities in Tennessee schools. This approach to total wellness encompasses the physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being of the individual.

Robotics (7th, 8th)- A 9 week course which introduces students to Robotics. Students work in pairs to program Vex IQ robots using RobotC software. This course uses the Engineering Design Process to develop students’ critical thinking and problem solving skills, as well as develop their ability to communicate and work with other students. Throughout the course, students program their robots to complete a variety of tasks, using simple commands and input from the robot’s sensors. At the end of the course, students will complete a final project which encompasses all the material covered. No Robotics experience is necessary.

Engineering (6th)- This course focuses on introducing engineering challenges for students to work on in small groups. Challenges involve in bridge building, aircraft design, raft making, NASA challenges, Catapult making, and other small stem tasks. Students are encouraged to think outside the box and use the supplies given to accomplish a specific task while competing among their peers.

Students develop the ability to communicate about themselves and their immediate environment using simple sentences containing basic language structures. This communication is evidenced in all four language skills (listening, speaking, writing and reading) with an emphasis on the ability to communicate orally and in writing. Students explore the similarities and differences between American culture and that of the Spanish-speaking world. This interactive course employs a variety of teaching methods and daily participation and study are required.

Strings offers students the opportunity to learn various string instruments (violin, viola, cello, string bass, guitar, etc.) in a classroom setting. Classes are not restricted to beginner or experienced students. Students will learn music theory, history, instrument technique with a variety of performance opportunities.

Students will explore Drama through script writing, character acting, scene design, directing, research, presentation, and context. Auditions will be held during the school year for the fall and spring productions and/or musicals.

Yearbook is open to 8th grade students as a minor class. Students must have teacher recommendations in order to be considered for yearbook. In yearbook, students take an active role in putting the annual yearbook together. This includes, but is not limited to, taking pictures at various athletic, related arts, and school events, using yearbook software to place images together, creating yearbook pages, and taking ownership of the yearbook production process.
